Stamp methods

Choose what a first scan does

Decide whether a new customer’s first scan of the till poster also asks for a stamp, or only joins them to the card.

Updated

The first time a new customer scans your till poster, two things could happen: they join your card, and they might also ask for their first stamp. First scan decides which. It’s one setting for your whole business, and it only affects a new customer’s very first scan.

Change the setting

Owners and admins can change it:

  1. Go to Settings and, under Loyalty cards, tap First scan.
  2. Choose one of the two options.
  3. Tap Save.

The row in Settings shows the current choice.

The two options

  • Counts as a stamp. This is the default. The first scan joins them and asks the till for their first stamp, which staff approve, as on every later visit.
  • Just joins them. The first scan only creates their card. Stamps start on their next scan.

Choose Counts as a stamp when joining usually happens at the till while paying, which is most businesses. Choose Just joins them when people often sign up away from the counter, for example while queuing, and you’d rather not have requests arrive before they’ve bought anything.

What the customer sees

A new customer who is already signed in sees your card’s rules and terms and one button:

  • With Counts as a stamp: “Joining starts your card and asks the till for your first stamp.” and Join and get my stamp.
  • With Just joins them: “Joining starts your card. Your stamps start on your next visit.” and Start my card. After joining, the screen says “You’re in! Your stamps start on your next visit.”

A customer who creates an account from the poster joins your card as they finish signing up, and the same rule decides whether that first visit asks the till.

What it doesn’t change

  • Existing customers. Everyone who already has your card is unaffected: each scan of the till poster asks for a stamp as always.
  • Window posters. They only ever join, whatever this setting says.
  • Welcome stamps. Stamps you set under New customers in the card editor are given on joining either way. With Counts as a stamp, the first request comes on top of them. See rewards along the way and welcome stamps.
  • Tap tags. A newcomer’s first tap follows the same setting as the till poster. See set up an NFC tap tag.
  • Cards set to secure tags only. Their till poster only ever joins, whatever this setting says. The first tap on the secure tag follows it.

The setting applies to every card your business runs. The card editor’s New customers section reminds you which one is chosen, with a link to change it.

For the rest of the till poster flow, see stamp requests from the till poster.
