Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes

Customers add their card to Apple Wallet on iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. What a pass shows, when it alerts and how the till scans it.

Updated

Customers can add their NextStamp card to Apple Wallet on an iPhone or to Google Wallet on Android. The pass sits beside their boarding passes and bank cards, updates by itself when stamps are added, and can alert them when something lands on the card. Customers who don’t add it keep their card in the browser, where it works the same way.

There’s nothing for your business to switch on. A few details in your settings make the pass better, below.

How customers add a card

The card’s own screen and the scan screen show the button for the customer’s phone: Add to Apple Wallet on an iPhone, an iPad or Safari on a Mac, and Add to Google Wallet on Android. Other browsers show both. Tapping it adds the pass; afterwards the Apple button reads “In Apple Wallet ✓” and the Google one becomes View in Google Wallet.

Beside the button, customers read what adding it means: the card stays up to date in their wallet, and your business can alert them there about rewards, gifts, deals and stamp offers on this card, and before a reward expires. They can turn alerts off in their wallet app. Adding the card is their agreement to those alerts, and NextStamp records it.

What the pass shows

  • The front: your logo on a white tile (or the card’s stamp if you haven’t added a logo), the card colour, the stamps collected, drawn as the same stamp grid customers see on their phone, and the card’s QR code for the till.
  • The deadline, if your card expires: “Stamps last until …”.
  • The details (the back of an Apple pass, below the card in Google Wallet): what’s next and what’s ready to use, how to reach your business (the email, phone and website from your business details), NextStamp’s support address, and review links for up to three outlets if your card asks for reviews.

When it alerts

The pass updates silently for ordinary stamps. It shows an alert only when something lands on the card:

  • a reward is ready: “A free coffee is ready”, with “Show your card at the till to use it.”
  • a lifetime tier is reached: “You reached Gold”
  • a campaign gift arrives: “A gift for you”, with your note
  • double stamps are switched on, with the days and hours
  • a deal starts, with its days and hours, on Google Wallet only, and only on cards added after the words beside the button mentioned deals
  • a reward will expire in three days

A card gets at most one campaign alert a day, whatever campaigns you run. Google Wallet also shows at most three alerts a day on one pass; any more update the pass quietly.

Near your outlets

Both wallets can bring the pass up when the customer is near one of your outlets: Apple Wallet on the lock screen, Google Wallet as a nearby reminder. They use the outlets you’ve pinned on the map, and only those where the card works. To pin an outlet, open it and tap Pin it where I am while you’re inside. See add, edit and archive outlets.

Make the pass better

  • Add your logo in business details, so the pass looks like your business. See design your loyalty card.
  • Add an email and a phone under How customers reach you in business details. They go on every pass. See edit your business details.
  • Pin your outlets so the pass can come up nearby.

When you change your logo, contact details or review links, NextStamp updates every pass for your business by itself.

At the till

Nothing changes for your team. The pass shows the card’s QR code, so the till scans it from Apple Wallet or Google Wallet the way it scans the card screen. When a card closes, its passes show it: an Apple pass is marked void and a Google pass turns inactive.

Questions customers ask

  • “Do I need the pass?” No. The card works in the browser either way, and the till can scan the code from the pass or from the card screen.
  • “How do I remove it?” In their wallet app, open the pass and remove it. Their NextStamp card stays as it is. See find your cards and show your code.
  • “It won’t add.” If they see “Too many tries. Wait a few minutes, then add the card again.”, a short wait fixes it.
