Set stamp limits per visit and per day
How many stamps one card can get in a visit and in a day, what counts as a visit, and when a change applies.
Every card has two limits: the most stamps one card can get in a visit, and the most it can get in a day. They stop a card being filled in one go, by mistake or on purpose, and they apply to every way of giving a stamp: scanning the customer’s card, approving a till poster request and approving a tap.
Set the limits
Limits are in the card editor, under Limits & rules. Owners and admins can change them.
- Max stamps per day. The most stamps one card can get in a day. New cards start at 5.
- Max stamps per visit. Usually 1. New cards start at 1.
Use 0 for unlimited. The visit limit can’t be higher than the day limit; the editor says so if it is.
What counts as a visit
Stamps within 15 minutes of each other count as one visit. With a limit of 1 a visit, a customer who gets a stamp at 10:00 can’t get another until 10:15, and a second request in between is refused.
The same 15 minutes decides what Insights counts as a visit, so the two always agree.
What counts as a day
A day runs from midnight to midnight in your business’s timezone, which you set in your business details. At midnight, the daily count starts again.
Giving several stamps at once
If a customer buys several items that each earn a stamp, raise Max stamps per visit first. With a limit above 1, the till’s customer sheet shows a stepper and quick amounts (1, 2, 3 and 5) so your team can add several stamps in one go. With the default of 1, the stepper stays at 1.
A request from the till poster or a tap always asks for one stamp. For more, your team scans the customer’s card instead. See scan a customer’s card or type its code.
A minute between stamps
Separately from the limits, a card can’t be stamped twice within a minute. It stops a double tap or a busy moment at the till adding the same stamp twice. Your team sees “This card was stamped a moment ago. Try again in a minute.” and customers see “Just a moment before the next stamp.” There’s no setting for this.
What people see at a limit
- Customers see, for example, “You’ve had your stamp for this visit.” or “You’ve had this card’s 5 stamps for today.”
- Your team sees, for example, “This card has had its 1 stamp for this visit.” or “Only 2 more for today: this card takes 5.”
A refused request isn’t lost: the customer can ask again on their next visit. Why didn’t I get a stamp? lists every message a customer might see.
When a change applies
Limits are the counter’s rules, not the card’s terms, so a change applies to every customer as soon as you publish, including customers part-way through a round. Stamps that were undone or expired never give back allowance for the day.
Limits are one of several safeguards. How NextStamp stops stamp fraud covers the rest.
